Philomath High School’s swim teams opened the season Wednesday with a tri-meet against Crosshill Christian and Sisters at Clemens Community Pool. The Warriors won 10 individual events and the boys beat out the two visiting schools for first place in the team standings.
PHS junior Lucas Brandt won both of his individual events in impressive fashion with times of 51.71 in the 100-yard freestyle and 1:03.57 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Brandt owns four school records and likely wouldn’t mind adding a few more. Mike Dill holds the 100 free record with a 48.99 set at the 1999 state meet. Brandt already owns the school’s breaststroke record with a 59.73 that he swam last season.
Senior Cameron McLennan started off his season on a high note in the 100 butterfly where he was unchallenged with a time of 59.56. McLennan was second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:15.15.
Senior Blake Hauck was fastest in the short sprint with a winning time of 28.19. Teammate Gage Mosbrucker, junior, was the runner-up in 28.82. Senior Evan Hernandez was first in the 100 backstroke in 1:15.03, a victory of 2.10 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.
Sophomore Cedric Gaskey finished behind Brandt in the 100 freestyle with a runner-up finish in 1:06.87.
For the girls, junior Kate Burriel was a double winner in her first competition of the season. She easily won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:58.09. Later in the meet, she took first in the 100 freestyle with a 1:11.47, edging the runner-up by 0.25 of a second.
Freshman Adelina Kowalewski had a runner-up showing in the 50 freestyle in 28.53, missing first place by just three-hundredths of a second. Sophomore Alyssa Weeber was second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:29.56.
Both of Philomath’s 200 medley relays were winners. The girls won by 1 second over Sisters with a time of 2:19.25. Kowalewski, sophomore Emmylou Cook, Burriel and junior Emma Mecham swam on the relay. For the boys, the Warrior foursome won by 3.56 seconds over Crosshill Christian with Hernandez, Brandt, McLennan and junior Wyatt Coen finishing in 1:56.44.
Philomath’s boys also won the 200 freestyle relay with Coen, senior Ike Avery, McLennan and Brandt finishing in 1:48.31, a full 10-plus seconds ahead of the runner-up team.
In the team standings, the boys won with 94 points to beat out Crosshill Christian’s 85. In the girls’ standings, Crosshill Christian, a private school out of Turner, easily won with 85 points while Sisters edged Philomath for second, 56-49.
The Warriors are scheduled to swim in the home pool again next Wednesday for another tri-meet that begins at 4:30 p.m. Cascade and Kennedy will join Philomath at the competition.
