The Philomath boys swim team came within one point of victory Friday at a tri-meet hosted by Newport High School while the girls placed third in their competition.

The Warriors boys finished with 106 points just behind Newport’s 107 with West Salem third at 65. Philomath’s girls scored 57 points, trailing Newport (126) and West Salem (112).

Junior Lucas Brandt led the Warriors with two individual victories, taking first in the 100-yard freestyle (52.73 seconds) and the 100 breaststroke (1:05.58). Brandt also swam a leg on Philomath’s winning 200 freestyle relay team.

Senior Cameron McLennan placed second in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:00.23 and added a third-place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.50).

Senior Mason Stevens contributed a pair of runner-up finishes, taking second in the 100 backstroke (1:11.53) and third in the 200 individual medley (2:44.42). Senior Evan Hernandez finished third in the 100 backstroke (1:18.45).

Philomath claimed victory in the 200 freestyle relay as the team of junior Wyatt Coen, senior Blake Hauck, McLennan and Brandt posted a time of 1:45.20.

The Warriors also placed second in the 200 medley relay, with Stevens, Brandt, McLennan and Coen combining for a 1:53.99 finish, and third in the 400 freestyle relay, with junior Gage Mosbrucker, junior Kayden Boynton, sophomore Cedric Gaskey and Stevens teaming for a 4:34.70 finish.

Other top-three finishes for Philomath included Coen, third in the 200 individual medley (2:46.38), and Hauck, third in the 100 backstroke (1:20.63).

Junior Kate Burriel paced the Philomath girls with a pair of third-place finishes. She took third in both the 200 individual medley (2:58.56) and the 100 butterfly (1:24.07).

Sophomore Alyssa Weeber added another third-place finish for the Warriors in the 100 breaststroke, clocking 1:30.58.

The Warriors’ 200 freestyle relay squad of junior Megan Ward, sophomore Hailey Smith, junior Charlotte Storch and Burriel took second place in 2:14.19. The 200 medley relay team of freshman Adelina Kowalewski, Weeber, Burriel and junior Emma Mecham placed third with a time of 2:20.79.

The swim teams will turn around and compete again at 10 a.m. Saturday at the District Sprint Meet at South Albany High School.
