A local jazz fusion band with ties to Philomath High School will perform a benefit concert for the Independent Community Center on Dec. 30.

The Root Vegetables — featuring Cedric Petrovich on drums, Emmett Murch on keyboards and Galen Murch on guitar — will play from 8:30-10 p.m. Tuesday at the center, located at the corner of Fern Road and Airport Avenue. The doors open at 8 p.m.

The group plays a blend of jazz, funk and soul music.

Two band members earned PHS diplomas this past spring and the third is currently a junior.

Brothers Emmett and Galen Murch previously helped with concrete work on the Independent Community Center’s bell tower alongside their father, Thomas Murch. Among the work that volunteers have been involved with include rebuilding the building’s front façade and bell tower.

The center has a fascinating history at its location south of Philomath. The building was originally constructed in 1919 as a one-room schoolhouse.

For the concert, a suggested donation of $10 will benefit the Independent Community Center. Attendees are encouraged to bring tips for the band.
