The Philomath High girls basketball team’s challenging 11-game run this season against schools in larger classifications ended Saturday afternoon in the home gymnasium with a 39-31 loss to 5A Silverton.
The Warriors (7-7) will now shift their full attention to Class 4A opponents — four from the Oregon West (North Marion does not have a varsity this season) plus a remaining nonleague game against Astoria. A breakdown of Philomath’s win-loss record shows a 3-4 record vs. 5A schools, 1-3 vs. California schools, 2-0 vs. 4A and 1-0 vs. 3A.
Philomath led 12-4 through the game’s first eight minutes over a stretch that included 3-pointers from junior Jordyn Hood and senior Isabelle Muir. Junior Annaleise Brown, who was very active inside in the first half, got to the foul line four times in the opening quarter and made three free throws. Sophomore Reagan Nuño hit a shot and the defense held Silverton to 1-of-11 shooting.
But the Foxes regained their composure in the second quarter and trailed just 19-17 at halftime. Philomath was clinging to a 26-23 lead going into the fourth before Silverton outscored the home team 16-5 over the final eight minutes.
The Foxes hit six 3-pointers in their victory with four of those in the second half. Junior Karlee Martirano did most of the damage with 15 points, which included a trio of 3s.
Brown had a team-high eight points for Philomath.
The Warriors will take the home court again at 7 p.m. Tuesday for a matchup against Sweet Home. The Huskies have lost three of their last four and have an overall record of 6-5 coming into the game.
