November has been a quiet month for seniors due to regular meeting times falling on Veterans Day and Thanksgiving, so we will be making that up in December.

We have two fun and informative meetings planned:

  • Tuesday, Dec. 2, 10 a.m. at Maxtivity Arts and Crafts Creative Space, 1604 Main St. — We will be creating some simple arts and crafts projects to celebrate the season. This should last between one to two hours, depending on how crafty you are. While this event is free, we will have a donation jar available to help cover the cost of materials (not required, but encouraged $1-$6). I am told one does not have to be super crafty to be successful (whew!).
  • Tuesday, Dec. 9, 10 a.m.-noon at Philomath Fire and Rescue, 1035 Main St. — We will be learning a bit about home safety. Participants will be taught by Rich Saalsaa and will have the opportunity to use a fire extinguisher to put out a small fire so we are better prepared for an emergency in our homes. James Hamilton from Bashful Bob’s will also teach us about options for door locks and other safety devices for seniors.

Since both activities involve preparation of supplies, we are asking those interested in attending to RSVP to Diane at 541-609-0018 prior to Dec. 1. We want to have enough supplies on hand for everyone.

The Philomath Sensational Senior Society has been going monthly since June 2025 and was formed because we do not have a senior center or other program in place. This group is free and open to anyone 50-plus within the Philomath area. Guests are always welcome and we try to keep it low key but helpful.

Looking forward to January, Psss will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 10 a.m. for a puzzle exchange and a time to visit. If you are a puzzler, please bring a puzzle or two to exchange. If you do not do puzzles, you could simply come to visit with other seniors in our area.

If you ever have questions, please contact one of the co-leaders of this group — Jane Sherwood (570-423-9231) or myself (541-609-0018).
