The Philomath High girls and boys track and field teams are both leading through the first day of the Oregon West Conference Championships. Individually, four boys and four girls have automatically qualified for state so far.
Philomath’s long jumpers both had first-place finishes with sophomore Kaden Howard going 6.66 meters and senior Janice Hellesto going 5.44 (results in the field events were reported in meters instead of feet).

The Warrior girls had a 1-2 finish in the high jump with seniors Anneka Steen (1.60 meters) and Hannah McDaniel (1.54) both headed to Eugene. For the boys, junior Blake Hauck cleared 3.15 meters for second in the pole vault and sophomore Jamin Peters went 43.11 meters in the discus — both state-qualifying performances.
There was one final on the track Friday with the 3,000-meter run and two Warriors qualified for state in that event. Freshman Cassidy Smart won the girls’ race with a time of 10:44.38 and Leo Pausch finished second for the boys in 9:07.60. PHS had some tough luck in both of those races with senior Adele Beckstead and junior Lukas Hernandez both finishing third.
In the team standings, Philomath’s boys have 60 points with Sweet Home in second at 46 and Newport third with 43. For the girls, the Warriors lead with 56 points, Cascade is second at 35 and Sweet Home is sitting in third at 31.

All of the other events on the track Friday were preliminaries. Several Warriors qualified for Saturday’s finals.
Day two action at Clemens Field is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. with the field events and 1 p.m. with the running events.
