Philomath High School’s boys and girls wrestling teams combined for seven medal finishes at the Tod Surmon Tournament Friday at South Albany High School.
Seniors Porter Compton and Lake Mulberry each earned second-place finishes to lead the Philomath boys. Compton went 002-1 at 157 pounds, recording pins over Samuel Walsh of Dayton in 4:55 and Rylan Brisby of Corvallis in 3:25 before falling to Thurston’s Sawyer Greenstreet in the championship match.
Mulberry also went 2-1 at 190 pounds, pinning Mohawk’s Austin Carlson in just 24 seconds and defeating Mountainside’s Isiah Conner by decision, 8-4, before losing to Beaverton’s Snowden Gabrielsen in the title bout.
Senior Derick Kohn placed sixth at 215 pounds with a 3-3 record. He opened with a technical fall over South Eugene’s Joseph Heindel, 15-0, then rebounded from a loss to West Albany’s Justice Edmiston with pins over Sisters’ Jozua Miller (3:29) and South Albany’s Ethan Bottemiller (2:51). Kohn lost to Mountainside’s Aidan McGuire in the consolation semifinals and by medical forfeit to Thurston’s Aiden Clark in the fifth-place match.
The Philomath girls earned three medals led by freshman Makinzey Harrington’s second-place finish at 135 pounds. Harrington went 2-1, pinning Corvallis’ Lettie Cochran in 3:07 and Marshfield’s Renee Anderson in 2:20 before falling to West Albany’s Hannah Alexander in the championship match.
Freshman Carsyn Pettit-Juvenal took third at 115 pounds with a 3-1 record. She pinned Mohawk’s Lillian McGuire in 26 seconds and McMinnville’s Peyton Johnson in 1:50, and defeated West Albany’s Shay Williams by fall in 3:48 in the third-place match. Her only loss came by fall to Marshfield’s Amina Palacios in the semifinals.
Junior Alexis Pettit also placed third at 100 pounds despite a 1-2 record in the round-robin format. Pettit’s victory was a pin over Corvallis’ Cali Sherry in 35 seconds.
Freshman Rielly Ellingsen finished sixth at 120 pounds with a 2-3 record. She opened with pins over Dayton’s Khloie Presock (1:40) and Springfield’s Harley Ford (3:05). Ellingsen lost her next two and wrestled Ava Stotts of Sisters in the fifth-place match, losing on a pin.
The Warriors boys placed eighth in the 23-team field with 65.5 points while the girls finished sixth among 20 teams with 58 points. Thurston won both team titles with 357.5 points on the boys side and 196 points for the girls.
Philomath is scheduled to wrestle its final home match at 5 p.m. Thursday against Sweet Home for Senior Night.
