The Philomath High School boys basketball team pulled off a 61-56 victory over Astoria on the road Saturday in a nonconference matchup.

Sophomore guard Dreyton Nuño provided an early spark for the Warriors with four 3-pointers in the first half, finishing the game with 12 points. Junior forward Hamish McConnell also had a productive afternoon on offense with 13 points off the bench, 10 of those coming in the second quarter as the Warriors built a 35-29 halftime lead.

Junior forward Jamin Peters also scored 13 points for Philomath with key second-half baskets.

Philomath buried seven 3s in the game — Nuño’s four plus two by McConnell and one by junior Kaden Howard.

Senior Quin Gohr led the Fishermen (8-4) with 20 points on seven field goals and 4 of 10 from the foul line. Junior Cooper Jones added 14.

Both teams struggled from the free-throw line at 47.1%, each going 8 for 17.

The Warriors (5-6) are scheduled to play at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Gladstone in a home game.
