The Philomath High School girls tennis team battled to a 4-4 draw with Valley Catholic on Tuesday but dropped the match in a tiebreaker, 10-9, falling to the Valiants in Beaverton.
Junior Lucy Thomas and sophomore Bethany Cannon, the top two singles players, each won their matches to pace the Warriors. Thomas cruised past freshman Emma Frias, 6-3, 6-3, while Cannon rallied to defeat junior Ava Thuret in three sets, 6-4, 6-7, 7-5.
Valley Catholic’s Joyce My Nguyen, a senior, and Sophia Fein, a freshman, claimed the other two singles spots, with Nguyen winning over sophomore Ella Hammonds, 6-0, 6-1, and Fein topping junior Cecilia Milesi, 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles, junior Clara Neville and sophomore Bella Nunez came from behind for the Warriors in the No. 2 slot to beat seniors Natasha Leong and Rachael Young, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. At No. 3, PHS seniors Logan Cook and Lacey Bacho dominated their match against senior Nidhi Krishnamurthy and sophomore Guadalupe Santiago-Hernandez, 6-0, 6-2.
Valley Catholic won at No. 1 doubles with juniors Brooke Kopetz and Satya Semenchalam winning 7-5, 4-6, 6-1, over senior Lucie Oster and junior Lizzie Workman. At No. 4 doubles, Valiants sophomore Aerin Kang and Ashley Simon beat junior Isabelle Norman and sophomore Cambria Braudrick, 6-2, 6-2.
The girls will head to the coast on Friday with matches at noon against North Bend and 3 p.m. against Marshfield.
