Philomath Fire and Rescue assisted with extinguishing a fire that broke out Thursday afternoon in a southwest Corvallis apartment complex, the local fire department reported.

The Corvallis Fire Department was dispatched to a complex located on Southwest 49th Street to find multiple apartments on fire and flames extending into attic space, the agency reported. Upon arrival, a second alarm was sounded with Philomath among those responding.

Philomath Deputy Fire Chief Rich Saalsaa said the local department initially sent an engine crew of three with a duty officer to standby at Corvallis Fire’s downtown station but on the second alarm, headed to the scene. In the meantime, volunteers arrived at Station 201 on Main Street to help cover the Philomath district and the west side of Corvallis.

“Crews aggressively attacked the fire and simultaneously conducted searches of multiple apartments,” Corvallis Fire reported on its Facebook page. “Crews also ventilated the attic space from the roof.”

Firefighters rescued a cat that had situated itself in a small void space, provided a blanket and supplemental oxygen and returned the pet to its owners.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Corvallis Fire said.

In addition to Corvallis and Philomath, other fire departments assisting included those from Albany, Monroe, Adair Village and Tangent, as well as the Corvallis Police Department.
