The Philomath High School boys basketball team will open the Class 4A playoffs on Friday with a road trip to St. Helens.

The Warriors (13-9) were seeded 12th for the playoff bracket after ending up at No. 11 in the final Oregon School Activities Association rankings. Fifth-seeded St. Helens (17-5) won the Cowapa League and was ranked No. 5.

The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip-off.

Philomath and St. Helens had five opponents in common this season. The Lions went 7-2 against Gladstone, Crescent Valley, Scappoose, Sweet Home and Astoria while the Warriors were 4-2 against those same schools. The two losses for both teams were against Crescent Valley and Scappoose. St. Helens beat Scappoose in two other games — the two teams are in the same conference.

Other first-round games are No. 16 Klamath Union at No. 1 Scappoose, No. 9 Marshfield at No. 8 La Grande, No. 13 Pendleton at No. 4 Madras, No. 14 Baker at No. 3 Molalla, No. 11 Astoria at No. 6 Marist Catholic, No. 10 Estacada at No. 7 Junction City and No. 15 Hidden Valley at No. 2 Newport.

The Oregon West’s third-place team, Stayton, missed qualifying for an at-large bid by one ranking spot.
