Philomath High’s wrestling teams brought home eight medals from the Grants Pass Winter Kickoff, a two-day tournament that wrapped up Saturday.

Senior Riley Barrett headlined the Warriors’ performance with a dominant championship run at 150 pounds. Barrett went 5-0, winning four of his five matches by technical fall or pin. He opened with a 45-second technical fall, followed by a 38-second pin, then added two more technical falls before capturing the title with a 5-3 decision over Grants Pass’ Zane Hill in the finals.

Senior Porter Compton placed fourth at 165 pounds with a 5-2 record. Compton won his first two matches by pin and technical fall before falling in the quarterfinals. He bounced back with three straight wins in the consolation bracket — all by decision or pin — before losing the third-place match to Hoopa Valley’s (Calif.) Donald Hostler.

Senior Derick Kohn took fifth at 215 pounds, going 6-2 in the tournament. Kohn won four consecutive matches in the consolation bracket, all by pin, before falling by decision in the consolation semifinals. He secured fifth place with a pin of McKinleyville’s (Calif.) Brayden Pinard.

Three more Warriors placed in the top six. Junior Odin Compton finished sixth at 138 pounds with a 2-3 record that included a pin and a decision victory. Senior Lukas Hernandez took sixth at 144 pounds, going 4-3 with four wins by pin or decision. Senior Lake Mulberry also placed sixth at 190 pounds with a 3-3 record.

In the team standings, Philomath finished fourth with 115.5 points behind champion Eagle Point (172.5), runner-up Grants Pass (162.5) and third-place Burns (160.5).

On the girls side, sophomore Sarah Robertson and freshman Makinzey Harrington both medaled for the Warriors.

Robertson placed fourth at 130 pounds with a 3-2 record. She won her first three matches by pin before falling in the semifinals. Robertson advanced to the third-place match with another pin but was defeated by Sutherlin’s Allie Eubank.

Harrington took sixth at 135 pounds with a 3-3 record. The freshman won her first three matches — two by pin and one by major decision — before losing in the semifinals and consolation semifinals. She fell in the fifth-place match to Modoc’s (Calif.) Eliza Pena by major decision.

Philomath’s girls finished 22nd in the team standings with 40 points. Grants Pass won the tournament with 164 points.

Philomath High’s boys are scheduled to next compete on Dec. 29-30 at the Northwest Duals at the Linn County Fairgrounds in Albany. The girls schedule shows their next meet on Jan. 2 at the Phil Smith Memorial Invitational at Junction City.
