The Philomath High School boys basketball team wrapped up its appearance at the South Coast Les Schwab Tournament Saturday in Coos Bay with a 60-26 victory over Sutherlin.

Junior Esias Sapp continued his hot shooting with nine points in the first quarter and 16 for the game, a performance that included a pair of 3-pointers. Sophomore Cole Barron was good on seven baskets for 14 points. And junior Jamin Peters put in four hoops and was 3 for 4 at the foul line for 11 points.

With the win, Philomath officially finished fourth place at the tournament, which was hosted by Marshfield High School.

Sutherlin (3-5) made just five field goals in the game. Junior Riley Heininge and senior Hunter Vanburen each had eight points.

Following the consolation semifinals, Philomath believed it would next play North Marion on Saturday morning. However, PHS coach Blake Ecker said the Huskies didn’t want to play a conference opponent at the tournament and so the Warriors were matched up against Sutherlin instead.

The Warriors (3-4) will play Tuesday at Junction City with the tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m. Philomath will then participate in a tournament at Scappoose with games against the host school at 7 p.m. Dec. 27 and Marshfield at 5 p.m. Dec. 28.
