Philomath High’s girls basketball team finished pool play at the Surf City Holiday Classic Monday evening with a 53-43 loss to North, a school out of Torrance, California, with an enrollment of around 1,800 students — more than four times that of Philomath.
The Warriors (6-4) shot out to an 18-8 lead in the first quarter behind strong starts from Reagan Heiken and Jordyn Hood. Heiken scored eight of her team-high 14 in the opening frame while Hood scored eight of her 10.
North chipped away at its deficit and trailed 28-21 at halftime. Heading into the fourth quarter, the Saxons had taken a 35-34 lead. Over the final eight minutes, North buried three 3-pointers and pulled away for good.
In addition to Heiken and Hood, Shaylee May finished with 11 points — seven of those coming in the second half. The Warriors shot 90% from the foul line (9 for 10) but were 0 for 5 on 3-point attempts.
Leila Fitzgerald led the Saxons (13-1) with 16 points. Shay Tokeshi scored 15 and Camryn Shimazaki added 14.
Philomath is scheduled to play a final game Tuesday at the Huntington Beach tournament before heading back to Oregon.
