The Philomath High School softball team got off to a rough start Monday in the Battle of the Beach at Newport with losses of 16-0 to Pendleton and 17-0 to Estacada.
In the team’s first game at the tournament, the Warriors started to get into a hole in the second inning when the Backaroos pushed six runs across. Pendleton added another four runs in the third and six in the fourth. The game went four innings.
Two players had hits for the Warriors. Sophomore Rylee Martin led off the game for PHS with a single. Sophomore Libby Kramer had a single in the second inning.
Philomath sophomore Hailey Smith pitched all four innings and allowed 11 hits and six walks with six strikeouts.
Senior Tatum Lambert went 3 for 3 with a triple and four RBIs to lead Pendleton. Senior Maryn Broker went 2 for 3 and drove in four runs.
Estacada, which is off to a 4-0 start this season, then downed Philomath by a 17-0 margin in four innings. The Rangers have scored 46 runs in four games.
Estacada scored nine runs in the first inning and then added three in the second, one in the third and four in the fourth. Junior Laney Briones threw a two-hitter with one walk and eight strikeouts. Junior Mckenzie Trujeque had a pair of hits and drove in three runs for the Rangers.
Philomath had two hits in the loss — a single by junior Riley Mason in the second and a single by Martin in the third. Junior Haley King and Smith each pitched two innings. King allowed four hits and six walks; Smith allowed three hits and three walks with three strikeouts.
Philomath (1-2) will try to get back into the win column Tuesday with two more games in the tournament. The Warriors will face Yamhill-Carlton at 11 a.m. and Nyssa at 1 p.m.
