Died — Wednesday, February 18, Mrs. Martha Devitt, at the family home on Woods Creek, a few miles west of Philomath, aged 48 years. The funeral will be held tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the home of W. Scott, in Philomath, with interment in Newton cemetery.

Editor’s note: Martha (Thompson) Devitt was born Aug. 14, 1865, in Minnesota. She married James A. Devitt in 1879, in Lisbon, North Dakota. The couple started a family there and lived in North Dakota into the late 1880s before heading west to Washington state. In the fall of 1903, a newspaper article reported that the Devitt family from Kent, Washington, purchased the Woods Creek farm comprising 830 acres that had been owned by R.M. Davisson. An online family tree shows that Martha and James had six children — George, Cleona, Elizabeth, Sidney, Mary and Helen. James, Martha, Cleona, Minnie and Sidney are all buried at Mount Union Cemetery. Mrs. Devitt’s death certificate shows the cause of death as “organic heart disease.”

Miss Cleona Anna Devitt died this morning up on Wood Creek, west of Philomath, aged about 23 years. The funeral service will be held at the First U.B. church in Philomath tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. Rev. Ware officiating. Interment will be in Newton cemetery.

Editor’s note: Cleona Anna Devitt was married Jan. 30, 1909, to Mark Munger at the M.E. parsonage. According to a news item on the marriage, “The happy young people are both residents of Philomath and will continue to make their home in that place.” In 1906, she had successfully completed the teachers’ examination. According to a news item published in 1908, she was teaching at the Woods Creek District school. There is no mention of a husband in her death notice, she is referred to as “Miss” and she was buried under her maiden name, although she is listed in Oregon death records as Cleone Anna Devitt Munger.
