To the Editor:

History will always be fascinating and in a community that appreciates history and tradition (I think of our excellent museums in Philomath and Corvallis), many may still be unaware that the most ancient and historical church is represented right in our backyard.

Namely, St. Anne Orthodox Church in Corvallis and St. Patrick Orthodox (mission) Church in Newport is the ancient church made present in our day and age. With roots that dig into the first century A.D., these Orthodox churches hold the ancient Christian traditions and liturgies in our area; the same Sunday service that was served hundreds of years ago, and is served around the world (from Jerusalem to Ephesus to Moscow to Corvallis), is served here today.

To many, this service will appear exotic and eastern: candles, incense, bells, bright robes, sacred images, chanting. Many are surprised that nearly the entire Sunday service is sung! There is great beauty in the Orthodox Church, and it is a wonderful repository of history made present. Come and see!
