Astoria took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth and held off Philomath in the top of the seventh for a 4-3 victory Monday on the first day of the Riverhawk Baseball Invitational at The Dalles.

The Warriors (1-2) have games coming up against Henley at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, St. Helens at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and the host school at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the tournament, which is being staged at Quinton Street Ball Park.

Philomath scored two runs in the second inning to take an early lead over Astoria. CK Kvidt began the inning with a walk and later came around to score on a ball put into play by Cameron Herbert. With two outs, Philomath scored again on an infield single by Wylie Griffith. Sammy Hernandez, who had singled earlier in the inning, scored on the play.

The Warriors added another run in the third for a 3-0 lead. Hernandez hit a double to left field to drive in AJ Altishin, who had opened the inning with a walk.

Astoria responded in the bottom half and tied the game, 3-3. The Warriors had only one hit after the third inning — a one-out single by Hernandez in the fifth.

In the sixth, Astoria’s Timber Gilmore reached on a two-out single and two batters later, Sam Mather drove him in for the lead. The Warriors went down 1-2-3 in the seventh.

Hernandez finished 3 for 4 to lead the offense. On the mound, Griffith went five innings and allowed three hits, one earned run and two walks with three strikeouts. Kvidt relieved in the sixth and allowed two hits, one run and one walk.
