House humor: The other day, a (state legislature) member objected to the reception of a bill providing for a Dog Census. A Benton county Republican rose and consoled the objecting member with the soothing assurance that no personal allusion to him (the objecting member) was intended. And on another occasion, a member of the judiciary Committee having called in question the correctness of a report from that committee, the offended author suggested that if the objecting member could not remember in the morning what happened in the committee room the night before he would better resign in favor of someone who was qualified for the position. These in addition to Mr. Bradshaw’s polecat report. (Published Oct. 8, 1874, in the Oregonian, Portland).

Two passengers riding in the bus, Mrs. Julia Campbell and Joe Kubeler, both of Toledo, were hospitalized. … The impact of the collision was so great, according to Aaron Dearing, deputy sheriff, who investigated the accident, that the rear of the bus ripped open and let the engine loose. The front end of the truck was also badly damaged. Milk on the truck at the time of the accident was spilled over the pavement. (Published Oct. 13, 1949, in the Benton County Herald).

Football victory: Philomath’s Andy Tasker ran 37 yards for a touchdowno on a fake punt two minutes into the fourth quarter Thursday night to ice a 26-6 ValCo League victory over Toledo. The Warriors, 3-3 overall, improved their league mark to 2-2. The Boomers fell to 1-5 and 0-4. “That was the key play and he made a great individual effort,” said Warrior coach Gene Dales. “He ran over one kid, then picked up good blocking and sprinted into the end zone.” Tasker is a 165-pound guard, who Dales joked about giving a chance to run the ball more often. … Both coaches said the game was sloppily played. Toledo lost the ball seven times on fumbles and Philomath coughed it up six times. (Published Oct. 12, 1984, in the Benton Bulletin).
