Following the cancellation of last year’s Philomath Citizens’ Academy, the city has rebooted its civic engagement program with a major change — no registration required.
The free nine-week educational series will run on Thursdays from Sept. 4-Oct. 30 and is open to drop-in participants.
“Whether you’re interested in just one topic or plan to attend all nine sessions, the Citizens’ Academy is designed to be flexible, informative and welcoming,” the city announced, emphasizing that participants can attend as many or as few sessions as their schedules allow.
Each Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at Philomath City Hall, attendees will dive into different aspects of municipal life. The program covers essential functions including police and fire services, budget and financial planning, schools, library and nonprofits, and city infrastructure and parks.
Unlike typical public meetings where citizens observe from the gallery, the academy creates an interactive environment where questions flow freely between residents and city staff.
Beyond learning about city operations, the academy serves as a networking hub for engaged residents. Participants — from newcomers getting their bearings to longtime locals deepening their understanding — can build connections with fellow community members who share an interest in Philomath’s future.
The program welcomes anyone 16 and older to ensure that high school students interested in civic life can participate alongside seasoned residents to create intergenerational dialogue about community priorities.
While the program has become more casual, the city maintains incentives for consistent participation. Residents who attend seven or more sessions will receive a certificate of completion from the city.
