The U.S. Forest Service is now offering Christmas tree permits for the Siuslaw National Forest, giving families the opportunity to cut their own tree this holiday season while helping maintain forest health.
Permits are available for purchase online through Recreation.gov or in person at the forest’s district offices in Hebo, Waldport and Reedsport. Those planning to buy permits in person should call ahead to confirm availability.
Each permit costs $5, with an additional $2.50 processing fee for online purchases through Recreation.gov. Fourth graders who have an Every Kid Outdoors pass can obtain a free permit by entering their pass or voucher number when purchasing online, though the $2.50 transaction fee still applies.
Before heading out to cut a tree, permit holders should carefully review harvest maps and guidelines available on the forest’s website. The site provides information about designated cutting areas, permitted cutting dates and which types of trees may be harvested.
According to the Forest Service, the Christmas tree cutting program serves a dual purpose beyond providing holiday trees for families. The permit system helps thin densely populated stands of small-diameter trees in designated areas. Removing these smaller trees allows remaining trees to grow larger and healthier while also creating open spaces that provide forage for wildlife.
