Philomath High’s boys wrestling team opened its season Saturday at the Perry Burlison Invitational at Cascade High School, getting a runner-up finish from senior Riley Barrett and a pair of top-five performances.
Barrett, competing at 157 pounds, went 3-0 before withdrawing from the championship match against Soldotna’s Michael Dickinson due to injury.
“We didn’t want to push it just for the finals,” Woosley said about Barrett’s situation. “Barely got through the semis and didn’t look right so we shut him down.”
Soldotna is a wrestling powerhouse program in Alaska and won the team title over Sweet Home.
Barrett won his first match by technical fall over Lebanon’s David Brandt in 2:21, then followed with a major decision over Crescent Valley’s Jacoby Jones. Barrett advanced to the finals with an ultimate tiebreaker victory over Mountainside’s Ethan Stock.
Senior Porter Compton placed fourth at 165 pounds with a 3-2 record. Compton opened with a technical fall and a major decision before falling in the semifinals to Soldotna’s Laramie Gibson. He bounced back to pin Lebanon’s Cade Weber in the consolation semifinals but lost the third-place match by technical fall to Cascade’s Hans Kamm.
Senior Lake Mulberry rounded out Philomath’s medal winners with a fifth-place finish at 190 pounds. Mulberry won his first two matches by technical fall before losing in the semifinals and consolation semifinals. He secured fifth place with a 7-3 decision over Dallas’ Asher Olliff.
Senior Derick Kohn went 1-2 at 215 pounds with a pin over McMinnville’s Ivan Allen. Kellen Carlson (106), Lukas Hernandez (144), Odin Compton (144) and Dillion Osborns (175) also competed in the tournament for the Warriors.
“We kind of got kicked in the mouth with what we were expecting out of our team as a whole,” Woosley said. “Time to reset and get back at improving.”
In the team standings, Philomath tied for 12th with 49 points. Soldotna ended up with 220 points to edge Sweet Home’s 213.
Philomath will host the Warrior Classic at 2:30 p.m. Friday. Other schools expected to compete include Crescent Valley, Dayton, Gilchrist, Junction City, Mohawk, Molalla, Springfield and Tillamook. There will be both boys and girls brackets.
