Philomath High’s Lukas Hernandez spends most of his time on the pitch anchoring the Warrior defense as a pivotal part of the team’s back line. As a result, it’s rare that he would ever have a scoring opportunity.
In Philomath’s 7-0 victory over Sweet Home Tuesday afternoon, Hernandez moved up as head coach Dave Ellis experimented with players in different positions after the Warriors had built a three-goal lead just 20 minutes into the contest.
Planning Commission March 16 agenda includes code updates, building permits
The Philomath Planning Commission plans to meet at 6 p.m. Monday at City Hall for an agenda that includes updates on code amendments, planning and building permits. According to the meeting agenda, commissioners will receive the latest information on updates to the city’s development code. One part of the review will focus on residential code,…
As it turned out, Hernandez was able to experience the thrill of burying the ball in the net during a varsity soccer match. His two younger brothers, junior Jacob Hernandez and sophomore Sammy Hernandez, know the feeling all too well — and yes, they also scored goals in the Oregon West Conference rout.
“I think it was freshman year on JV, I think I got one in,” Lukas Hernandez said while trying to recall the last time he scored a goal. “I got at least one because I used to play midfielder.”
Philomath was leading 3-0 at the time. Sammy Hernandez opened the scoring with a header into the net with an assist by senior Zach Grapoli. Then Jacob Hernandez finished with an assist by junior Esias Sapp. The third goal was scored unassisted by sophomore Dreyton Nuño.
In the 27th minute, Lukas Hernandez joined in on the fun.

“Dreyton had the ball in the corner and I kind of waited right at the PK spot and the ball came across,” Hernandez said. “It was just one touch and right in the corner.”
By the way, the PK spot that Hernandez mentioned is 12 yards from the goal where penalty kicks are taken — a prime position for scoring in the box.
“It’s fun being out there with my brothers and finally getting that one to go in,” he said.
After leading 4-0 at the break, Philomath quickly added two more goals with senior Caleb Babcock finding the net in the 48th minute with an assist by senior Blake Hauck. Three minutes later, Sammy Hernandez scored his second goal with Nuño getting credit for an assist.

Freshman Oliver DeMasi closed out the scoring by converting on a penalty kick in the 65th minute.
Philomath will next face No. 1 Stayton on the road at 4 p.m. Thursday. The Eagles handed the Warriors their first loss of the season back on Sept. 30.
“We just need to focus a little more,” DeMasi said, adding that the players feel confident. “We can beat them.”
