Philomath Has Pneumonia Victim — Arthur E. Bottum, of Philomath, 26-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Bottum of that place, died at the family home at 11 o’clock yesterday morning, a victim of pneumonia. The funeral service will be held from the United Brethren church in Philomath at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon, tomorrow, and interment will be in Crystal Lake cemetery. Deceased was a member of one of Philomath’s best known families and is survived by his parents and several brothers and sisters. The young man is Philomath’s first pneumonia victim.
Editor’s note: Arthur Eugene Bottum was born April 13, 1892 near Rockwell, Iowa, according to his World War I Selective Service System Draft Registration Card. His parents were Eugene Bottum (1856-1933) and Edna Jane Gilbert (1866-1946). At the time that he registered for the draft, he was listed as a sawmill laborer at Benton County Lumber Co., near Philomath. He claimed exemption from the draft for “sickness (mentally weak).” Mr. Bottum died Oct. 21, 1918, and was buried at Mount Union Cemetery, not Crystal Lake Cemetery as reported in the news of his death.
