In a battle for third-place honors at the Les Schwab South Coast Tournament in Coos Bay, Mountain View’s boys basketball team outgunned Philomath in the fourth quarter to post a 65-59 victory.
The Warriors (2-6) led 49-48 going into the fourth quarter but the Class 5A Cougars had the upper hand down the stretch — a run that included a trio of 3-pointers by junior Charlie O’Connell.
Senior Jace Brewer hit four free throws and senior Mason Chambers scored a couple of baskets for Mountain View to hold off the Warriors over the final eight minutes. The free-throw performance was significant in the game with Mountain View finishing 15 of 17 (88.2%) compared to Philomath’s 8 of 19 (42.1%).
“Missed free throws and mental errors cost us the game,” PHS coach Blake Ecker said.
The game was close through the first three quarters with Mountain View leading 17-15 after the first and 29-26 at halftime. The Warriors put together a strong offensive performance in the third quarter to take the lead. Junior Josiah Peters and sophomore Jamin Peters made significant scoring contributions during the quarter by combining for 21 of the team’s 23 points.
Josiah Peters finished with 24 points on the strength of nine field goals, two of those being 3-pointers, and 4 of 5 from the free-throw line. He was named to the all-tournament team. Jamin Peters scored all 10 of his points in the third quarter.
Meanwhile, Chambers had 24, O’Connell finished with 17 and Brewer added 10 for the Cougars (4-3).
Redmond won the tournament with a 57-43 win over Marshfield in the championship game.
The Warriors will now head to another tournament with their biennial appearance in the Clarke Cochran Christmas Classic in Ketchikan, Alaska. Philomath will play three games in the tournament, which runs Dec. 27-29.
