The Philomath High School girls basketball team wrapped up play in the Oregon West Conference on Wednesday with a 66-14 victory at Newport. With a game that had been scheduled for Friday at Sweet Home canceled, the Warriors will now prepare for next week’s Class 4A showcase tournament.
Against Newport, the Warriors scored 23 points in both the first and third quarters and held the Cubs to a single field goal in the second half to post another easy conference win. Philomath beat league opponents — whether they counted in the standings or not — by an average of 31 points. Ten of those 11 wins had a margin of victory of 22 points or more.
Coach Ben Silva said Sweet Home canceled because the Huskies did not have enough players available. The Warriors beat Sweet Home, 73-29, on June 4.
In the win over the Cubs, Philomath led 23-9 after the first and 31-12 at halftime. Junior Sage Kramer scored 13 of her 26 points in the first quarter alone. For the game, she had 11 field goals, three of those 3-pointers, and converted on her only free throw attempt.
Senior Mia Rust finished with 10 points on three field goals and 4 of 5 free throws.
The pairings for the 4A tournament have not yet been finalized but Philomath is expected to play a home game on Tuesday in the quarterfinals. It’s possible that the Warriors would end up playing at a neutral site Tuesday if matched up against a team from eastern Oregon, such as Baker.
The 4A tournament’s semifinals will be played June 24 at North Bend with the championship game following on June 25 at Marshfield. A third-place game will also be played on June 25 at North Bend.
Philomath’s record for the season overall stands at 11-1 with the lone loss coming by six points at 5A unbeaten Corvallis.
