The Philomath High School girls volleyball team put together a complete performance Friday night in a three-set sweep over visiting Ontario. The Warriors won 25-11, 25-21, 25-11.
“It was a great night of teamwork volleyball with every player contributing to our success,” second-year coach Whitney Thomas said. “I’m very proud of every one of them!”
Philomath ended the match with an ace by junior Rainey Hamblin.
Senior Nora Stanley had a team-high nine kills while sophomore Alyssa Stanley and senior Marri Best each finished with five. Junior Addison Rice and senior Cheyenne Adams had six and five assists, respectively.
Ontario (3-6) could not keep up with the Warriors in the first and third sets but had an impressive rally in the second set after trailing 8-0 early to make things interesting. After the visitors had tied the set, Philomath regrouped and finished strong.
With PHS leading 21-20, Alyssa Stanley put down a kill for a two-point lead and then Ontario had a kill attempt sail long for a three-point advantage. With the home team up 23-21, Adams was in on the final two points with an off-speed shot for the 24th point followed by a hard serve that the Tigers couldn’t handle on the 25th point.
Philomath (2-8) has defeated Ontario twice this season. The Warriors also downed the Tigers earlier this month in a tournament at Estacada.
Philomath will next take the court at 6 p.m. Tuesday on the home floor against Taft.
