State Rep. David Gomberg (D-Otis) has been named chair of a newly formed Oregon Blue Economy Task Force, created this year to examine ways to grow the state’s coastal economy while safeguarding coastal ecosystems.
The task force was established through Senate Bill 1525 during the 2026 legislative session. Gomberg, whose District 10 includes Philomath, will lead the group alongside Vice Chair Sen. David Brock Smith (R-Port Orford).
In addition to the two legislative members, 16 community members have been appointed to the task force. The group holds its first meeting Sept. 2.
According to a news release from Gomberg’s office, the task force will conduct a broad review of Oregon’s blue economy — including existing economic development strategies, infrastructure, workforce initiatives, research, investment and regulatory pathways — and identify opportunities for sustainable growth.
“Oregon has an extraordinary opportunity to build a stronger coastal economy while remaining committed to the long-term health of our ocean and coastal ecosystems,” Gomberg said in the release.
He said the task force’s discussions will touch on topics such as Oregon seafood and coastal habitat, and that the goal is to find strategies that create economic opportunity, strengthen coastal communities and support sustainable innovation.
Brock Smith said the effort will depend on cooperation among a wide range of interests.
“Successful blue economy development requires collaboration across industries, communities, government, Tribes, research institutions and environmental interests,” he said. “The strength of this effort will come from bringing those perspectives together and focusing on solutions that can work for Oregon’s coastal communities.”
The task force is required to submit a report to the Oregon Legislative Assembly and the Ocean Policy Advisory Council by Sept. 15, 2027, including any recommendations for future legislation.
