The Philomath Museum’s Moreland Gallery will open a new exhibit on Saturday featuring works from the Corvallis Art Guild that explore themes of shelter, safety and survival.

“Refuge: Where Life Endures” runs May 2 through July 25 and marks the latest community showing from a guild that traces its roots back 80 years when local artists came together to make art in the aftermath of World War II.

The Corvallis Art Guild was among more than 20 area groups that collaborated to establish what is now known as The Arts Center. The guild continues to display members’ work throughout the region and will host the 63rd annual Clothesline Sale of Art on Aug. 1 in Corvallis Central Park.

This year’s exhibit theme asks what refuge means in challenging times. According to organizers, participating artists explore questions about how to find shelter, express personal truths and visualize safety when words fall short.

“Over the last 80 years the names have changed, but the challenges are the same — and ever more urgent,” the Benton County Historical Society wrote in an exhibit description. “How, now, shall we live? When words aren’t enough, how can we express our truths?”

A public reception is scheduled for Thursday, May 8, from 5-7 p.m. at the Philomath Museum.

The Philomath Museum is located at 1101 Main St. Hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is free.
