The Philomath High School boys and girls swim teams competed away from home for the first time this season with Wednesday’s appearance at the Cascade Invitational.

Swimming at the Stayton Family Memorial Pool, the boys placed fourth and girls fifth in the team standings. Winning teams at the meet were the Stayton boys and Salem Academy girls.

Individually for the Warriors, senior Cameron McLennan won two events with first in the 100-meter butterfly in 1:10.03 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:22.40. Junior Wyatt Coen captured first place in the 400 freestyle with a time of 5:47.38.

Senior Mason Stevens earned second place in the 100 backstroke, touching in 1:22.62, while senior Evan Hernandez took third in the same event with a time of 1:23.04.

Other top-three finishes for the boys included the 200 medley relay with Stevens, senior Isaac Avery, McLennan and Coen posting a time of 2:17.38.

Junior Kate Burriel led the Philomath girls with second in the 200 individual medley (3:15.32) and third in the 100 backstroke (1:28.94). The 400 freestyle relay team of junior Charlotte Storch, Burriel, junior Emma Mecham and sophomore Hailey Smith finished second with a time of 5:37.86.

The 200 medley relay team of sophomore Alyssa Weeber, sophomore Emmylou Cook, Burriel and Mecham placed third in 2:46.59.

A few notes on the times — events at the Stayton pool were in meters, not yards as seen at most meets and the marathon swim was 400 meters instead of 500. Junior Lucas Brandt did not compete for the boys.

Philomath is scheduled to compete again on Friday at the Sweet Home Invitational.
