Philomath High’s girls wrestling team opened its season Friday in a 25-school meet hosted by McKay High in Salem.
Competing in the Battle for the Capital, Warriors freshman Makinzey Harrington placed fourth in her high school wrestling debut with a 4-2 record at 140 pounds. Harrington opened with a loss in her first match but battled back to win four straight in the consolation bracket — all on pins.
Harrington advanced to the third-place match but lost to Silverton’s Sofie Baldridge.
All six wrestlers that competed for PHS won at least one match at the massive tournament. Freshman Carsyn Pettit-Juvenal went 2-2 at 120 pounds with her most impressive win coming via a pin in 1:04 over an opponent from West Albany. Sophomore Addison Liddell at 145 also won twice with back-to-back pins in her first two matches.
Junior Alexis Pettit (105), freshman Rielly Ellingsen (125) and sophomore Sarah Robertson (130) also had victories. Robertson won her first match but lost in the quarterfinals to fall into the consolation bracket. There, she exited the tournament on a medical forfeit. Pettit had a win by major decision and Ellingsen had a second-period pin over an opponent.
In the team standings, Philomath finished 18th with 39 points. Soldotna, a school out of Alaska, finished first ahead of North Salem.
Philomath’s girls will next wrestle on Dec. 12 at the Warrior Classic in the PHS gym. Bouts are scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
The Philomath boys open their wrestling season Saturday with an appearance at the Perry Burlison Classic at Cascade High School.
