The Philomath High School volleyball team took care of business Tuesday evening with a three-set sweep at North Marion, 25-12, 25-10, 25-12.
The Warriors remain alone in second place in the Oregon West Conference standings with a 7-2 record and will try to clinch a state playoff berth at home Thursday against visiting Newport. The top two teams in the league standings automatically advance to the Class 4A playoffs.
As of Tuesday night, Philomath was sitting at No. 5 in the OSAA rankings.
“We played well all night to keep the momentum going in our favor and got the job done,” PHS coach Whitney Thomas said. “Lucie Oster did a great job on defense and serving and kept the team going in some good rallies. It was an all around good night for Warrior volleyball.”
The program’s seniors will be recognized prior to Thursday’s game against the Cubs, which is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start in the PHS gym.
“It’s a good win going into Thursday vs. Newport,” Thomas said. “They are always a good opponent and senior night always brings a little uncertainty.”
Statistically in the win over North Marion, junior Nora Stanley and senior Taylor Hudson each had 10 kills. Senior Shaylee May and junior Megan Ward each had seven kills. Senior Avery Smith finished with 29 assists.
Philomath goes to 14-6 overall. The Huskies dropped to 2-14 overall, 0-9 in the conference.
