Philomath High sophomore Kya Bolton either scored or assisted on five of the team’s six goals in a 6-0 victory Tuesday at Sweet Home.

The Warriors remain unbeaten in the Oregon West Conference with a 6-0 record and go to 10-1 overall. Seven of the team’s 10 wins this season have been shutouts. As of Tuesday night in the OSAA rankings, Philomath was sitting at No. 4 behind Marist Catholic, The Dalles and Scappoose.

“We were working on some new things all night,” PHS coach Mat Phelps said about the matchup with Sweet Home. “The girls did a good job of being patient and sticking to the game plan. Things really started clicking well in the second half and we played really creative soccer.”

Philomath scored twice in the first 11 minutes of the match on shots by senior Ana Candanoza and Bolton. Assists on the first two were credited to Bolton and junior Jordyn Hood.

The Warriors didn’t score the rest of the half and led 2-0 at the break.

In the second half, the “clicking well” as Phelps described occurred with four goals over a 15-minute stretch. Hood made it 3-0 with an assist by sophomore Bethany Cannon in the 43rd minute. Five minutes later, Hood scored again, this time with an assist by Bolton.

Bolton then scored in the 50th and 58th minutes with assists by Candanoza and senior Maggie King.

Philomath will come home Thursday for a matchup against Stayton, a team the Warriors defeated 4-0 back on Sept. 30. The game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. start.
