Philomath Fire and Rescue issued an urgent request to residents of the fire district Thursday to refrain from any outdoor debris burning, including burn barrels, from Friday through Tuesday due to increased fire danger in the area.
The five-day stretch of no burning comes despite the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality’s spring burn season remaining officially open. Fire Chief Chancy Ferguson said current weather conditions require extra precautions to prevent potential wildfire outbreaks.
“We understand the DEQ’s spring burn season is still officially open, but the current environmental conditions pose an elevated risk that we cannot ignore,” Ferguson said. “Our priority is the safety and well-being of our community, and we are asking for your cooperation in refraining from any backyard debris burning.”
The combination of dry weather, increased temperatures, and windy conditions has significantly raised the risk of fires spreading rapidly, according to the fire department.
During the temporary burn restriction, residents are advised to avoid burning any yard debris, agricultural waste or other materials from June 6-10. The fire department also recommends staying informed about weather updates and fire safety warnings, while ensuring fire-prone materials are stored safely away from potential ignition sources.
