Philomath teen Lucille Reinhart accepted an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy as a member of the Class of 2029.

Reinhart, who is part of Crescent Valley High School’s Class of 2025, is scheduled to be inducted on June 26 to mark the beginning of six challenging weeks of basic midshipman training during “Plebe Summer” — a term used for what essentially is boot camp for incoming freshman, who are called “plebes.”

Reinhart said she plans to study cyber operations.

“The pressure and rigor of Plebe Summer is carefully designed to help plebes prepare for their first academic year at the Naval Academy and the four years of challenge that awaits them,” the U.S. Naval Academy wrote in a press release. “As the summer progresses, the new midshipmen rapidly assimilate basic skills in seamanship, navigation, damage control, sailing and handling yard patrol craft. Plebes also learn infantry drills and how to shoot 9-mm pistols and M-16 rifles.”

Other daily training sessions involve moral, mental, physical and professional development and team-building skills. Each year, approximately 1,200 individuals are admitted to the Naval Academy’s incoming class.
