BASEBALL
Newport series continues

The Warriors will square off with Newport at Terry Stephenson Field at 5 p.m. Wednesday in the second game of their pivotal series that impacts not only the Oregon West Conference standings but positioning for the Class 4A state playoffs.

The Warriors’ 6-3 win on Monday gave them sole possession of first place in the league with a 10-0 record. Overall, the Warriors have a 17-2-1 record and are ranked No. 3 by the OSAA. PHS has won 11 straight after stumbling at Gladstone back on April 11.

Newport, ranked No. 5 with a 16-4 record, are still in the hunt for the league title at 9-1. The Cubs can take over the top spot if they come out on top in the second and third games of this series. Philomath snapped Newport’s 11-game winning streak on Monday.

After the Newport series, the Warriors will wrap up conference play next week with three games against North Marion (6-13, 3-7).

SOFTBALL
Going for Sweet Home sweep

Philomath’s softball team is embattled in an intense fight for third place in the Oregon West, which is important when it comes to which teams will qualify for the play-in round for a shot at reaching the state playoffs.

Both the Warriors and Huskies are sitting at 5-5 in league play and will meet at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Philomath. The Warriors beat Sweet Home twice earlier this season with wins of 9-5 on April 14 and 9-3 on April 24.

The winner of Wednesday’s game would be all alone in third place but hanging onto that spot down the stretch could be a challenge with four more games to be played — PHS has a 3-5 record against those final four opponents so far this season.
