SUMMARY:Lecture: 'Museums A Place and A Practice' at Philomath Museum
DESCRIPTION:Lecture: Museums A Place And A Practice\nSPEAKER: Natascha Adams\n\n\nThursday\, May 7\, 10:30 a.m.\n\n\nMuseums are more than places that preserve objects—they are spaces where communities explore stories\, context\, and shared understanding. In this talk\, Benton County Historical Society’s Curator of Exhibitions\, Natascha Adams\, reflects on how museums and history organizations help communities document diverse experiences\, navigate complex issues\, and foster meaningful public dialogue. Through examples from her work in Oregon museums\, she highlights how storytelling and interpretation strengthen civic connection and community identity.\n\n\nNatascha Adams is the Curator of Exhibitions at the Benton County Historical Society\, where she leads dynamic\, story-driven galleries at the Philomath and Corvallis Museums. Her work is shaped by an international upbringing and a family history of migration\, fostering a deep commitment to belonging\, curiosity\, and connecting past and present. With an M.A. in Museum Studies and a diverse background spanning archaeology\, nonprofit leadership\, and community engagement\, she brings a multidisciplinary approach to revitalizing museums as vibrant public spaces. Above all\, Natascha is driven by a lifelong curiosity and a deep belief that history\, when told well\, has the power to strengthen communities.

SUMMARY:Lecture: 'The American Revolution — An Enduring Paradox' at Philomath Museum
DESCRIPTION:Lecture: The American Revolution — An Enduring Paradox\nSPEAKER: William G. Robbins\n\n\nSaturday\, May 16\, 10:30 a.m.\n\n\nThomas Jefferson wrote in the Declaration of Independence that “all men are created equal\,” but in 1776 this ideal did not apply to many groups\, including enslaved people\, women\, and Native Americans. Abraham Lincoln later argued the phrase was meant as a future goal\, while the document itself mainly justified independence by listing grievances against King George III. Despite its powerful ideals\, the Declaration included contradictions—such as its treatment of Native Americans—and its promise of equality remains something the United States continues striving to achieve.\n\n\nWilliam G. Robbins will talk about the ideals and contradictions in this important document\, as we contemplate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.\n\n\nSuggested donation of $5-10. These lectures are free to the public\, thanks to the support of our generous Historical Society donors and members like you!\n\n \n\n\nPhotography Notice: By attending this event\, you acknowledge and agree that photography and/or video recording may take place. Your image\, likeness\, and voice may be used for promotional\, marketing\, or archival purposes without further notice or compensation.\n\n\nFor accommodation related to a disability\, please contact Anya Ballinger at education@bentoncountymuseums.org
