|Correction: Coach Gary Quandt confirmed that late results in third-place matches actually created a tie for first place between Philomath and Marist Catholic and his original report that the Warriors had won by one point turned out to be inaccurate. The story is updated below to reflect that Philomath and Marist were the 4A State Showcase co-champions.|
The Philomath High School girls tennis team’s top singles player and top doubles team both made the finals in Tuesday’s 4A State Showcase in Eugene and even though both came up short and settled for runner-up finishes, the Warriors scored just enough as a team to win the program’s first-ever state team title.
Philomath and Marist Catholic shared the right to be called No. 1 with 12 points each in the final standings.
Freshman Bailey Bell started the day with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Marist senior Ellie Christian in the semifinals. But in the championship match, she dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision to Klamath Union’s Patricia Dougherty in an all-freshman state finale.
Chloe Jurva and Atira Fairbanks, both seniors, had a significant victory in the semifinals by defeating top-seeded Chloe Kincade and Courtney Silbernagel of Junction City, 7-5, 6-3. The fourth-seeded Warriors pair then lost a heartbreaker in a finals matchup against second-seeded seniors Hannah Nelson and Alyssa Beatty of Molalla, 6-4, 6-7, 7-6.
For the boys, doubles partners Nick Stucki and Dylan Bell took third place. Stucki, a senior, and Bell, a junior, lost in the semifinals to freshman Peyton Tyner and sophomore Jack Kiefer of Marist, 6-2, 7-5. But the pair regrouped for a third-place match against seniors Jacob Farr and Colton Lee of Cascade and took a 6-2, 6-7, 6-4 victory.
