The Philomath High School baseball team scored nine runs in the first inning and starting pitcher Cameron Ordway had a no-hitter going when he left the game with one out in the fifth inning in what ended up as a 16-8 Warriors win on Monday.
Ordway’s 4-1/3 innings pitched included a stat line of no hits and no earned runs allowed with two walks and seven strikeouts.
At the plate, Philomath pounded out 13 hits and reached base seven times on walks. Ty May had a potent bat by going 3 for 5 with five RBIs. David Griffith was 2 for 4 with four RBIs. Mason Stearns went 2 for 4 and Alek Russell was 2 for 5. Ordway also drove in a pair of runs.
The game opened with Philomath’s first two batters getting hit by a pitch followed by a walk to load the bases for May, who delivered with a two-run single. Chase Beardsley and Stearns had one-run singles and Ordway drove in a run when he was hit by a pitch for the second time in the inning.
Griffith drove in two more with an infield single and a May double brought in the eighth and ninth runs of the inning.
Despite that run-heavy start, the Warriors didn’t score again until the fifth inning. Stearns led off the inning with a double and scored on an Ordway single for a 10-0 lead.
Elmira scored a couple of runs in the fifth and then made things interesting with six runs in the sixth to cut the Philomath lead to just 10-8. But the Warriors responded in the top of the seventh with six runs.
Brayden Shenk scored when Adam Hernandez reached on an error to put the Warriors up by three. Ordway stole home for another run and May hit his second double of the game to drive in Hernandez.
Russell followed with a single to plate May. Later in the inning, Griffith hit a two-run single for a 16-8 lead.
Hernandez, who had come in to pitch with no outs in the sixth inning, retired Elmira 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh. Brayden Shenk also saw action time on the mound.
Hunter Stockinger had 10 strikeouts in relief at pitcher for Elmira (8-8).
Philomath (9-7) will wrap up the season at 5 p.m. Wednesday with a home game against 5A Crescent Valley.
