A ceremony in recognition of Armed Forces Day and Peace Officers Memorial Day will serve as the backdrop of this year’s annual flag-placement event on Saturday at Mount Union Cemetery in Philomath. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
Organizers invite the community to attend the ceremony, which will be presented by local residents with the participation of the Benton County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Army ROTC, Oregon Army National Guard and Mount Union Cemetery Association.
Following the ceremony, small groups will venture around the cemetery and place flags on the grave sites of veterans. Mount Union Cemetery is the resting place for more than 200 veterans. In addition, wreaths will be presented in honor of active members of the armed forces and peace officers who have fallen in the line of duty.
Armed Forces Day and Peace Officers Memorial Day both fall on May 15. The annual event also traditionally corresponds with Memorial Day, which this year is on May 31.
The cemetery is located at 2987 Mount Union Ave.
