PHS softball team crushes Woodburn, 20-2

The Philomath High School softball team won its second straight game in batting practice style Thursday over Woodburn, 20-2. The game was stopped after three innings on the 15-run mercy rule.

In those three innings, Philomath collected 15 hits and seven walks with 19 RBIs. Five players had a multiple-hit game.

The Warriors improve their record to 3-2 on the season and will face a major test on Monday with a home game against Newport. The Cubs have been impressive in the early going this season with a 5-0 record.

Philomath flexed its muscle right away in the top of the first in the rout over Woodburn with eight runs. Senior Kaili Saathoff set the tone by leading off the game with a solo home run to center field. Reagan Larson had two singles in the first and Presley Reichhuber picked up a single as well but Woodburn contributed to the PHS cause with walks, errors and wild pitches.

In the second inning, Emily King led off with a single but Woodburn regrouped to retire the next two batters. Philomath then had a string of five straight two-out singles by Ahnika Tryon, Mia Bennett, Kyla Berger, Reichhuber and Saathoff. By the end of its half inning, Philomath had a 13-0 lead.

Woodburn scored in the bottom of the second but Philomath wasn’t done racking up the runs. In the top of the third, the Warriors scored seven more times. King opened the inning with a single and she scored on a Melanie Baldwin triple. Walks and errors continued to plague the Bulldogs although singles by Saathoff, King and Baldwin were also in the mix — those latter two getting hits on their second time through the batting order.

In the bottom of the third, Woodburn needed to score five runs to extend the game. The Bulldogs did get one run in but that would be it.

Tryon threw 44 pitches in the three-inning game, allowing five hits and one walk with four strikeouts.

At the plate, Saathoff went 3 for 4 with four RBIs, King was 3 for 3, Larson finished 2 for 3 with three RBIs, Reichhuber went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and Baldwin was 2 for 4.

The Saathoff home run was Philomath’s first of the season. She’s been on an offensive tear with a .500 batting average. King is hitting .471 and Reichhuber .467 through five games.

Woodburn dropped to 0-5 with the loss.
