Two candidates so far for Philomath School Board

Three positions on the five-member Philomath School Board will be voted upon in the May 18 special election and as of Tuesday afternoon, two candidates had thrown their names into the hat — Rick Wells and Joey McGlinchy.

The deadline to file by declaration is coming up March 18.

Wells is a familiar name and face to those who follow the School Board. He served four terms over a span of 16 years from 2003-19. Wells is running for Position 1, which is currently held by Jim Kildea.

Wells, a logging truck driver, chose not to run in 2019, citing health issues as a reason.

As reported last month, McGlinchy is running for Position 4, the seat currently held by Shelley Niemann. McGlinchy is currently serving on the Philomath Planning Commission.

A third seat, currently held by Greg Gerding, is also up for grabs in the election.

Candidates must be at least 21 years old, registered to vote and have lived in the Philomath School District for one year immediately preceding the election. Board members may live anywhere within the district boundaries and will be elected on an at-large basis.

Candidates must file with the county clerk’s office by either submitting a petition with signatures of registered voters or by declaring a candidacy and paying the filing fee. Filing by petition has a deadline of March 11 and candidates should contact the Benton County Elections Office to determine how many signatures are required. Filing by declaration has a deadline of March 18.

School board members are elected to four-year terms and successful candidates will serve from July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2025.

Fire & Rescue board

Three seats on the Philomath Fire & Rescue Board of Directors are also included on the May 18 ballot, each of those positions carrying four-year terms.

As of Tuesday, two candidates had filed — Ken Corbin and Doug Edmonds.

Corbin is running for Position 2, the seat currently held by Ruth Jacobs. He has been a volunteer firefighter and medic with Philomath Fire & Rescue for 33 years.

Edmonds is running for Position 3, currently held by Joe Brier. Edmonds has a heavy volunteer background with the city of Philomath, most recently on the City Council.

Candidates must be registered to vote and live in the fire district and have the same filing deadlines as the school board candidates. Local residents interested in running can reach out to Philomath Fire & Rescue’s Lillee Rodriguez at 5471-360-0030 or [email protected].

The county anticipates mailing ballots to local voters around April 28.
