Warrior Nation: Cross-country schedule coming together

The Philomath High School cross-country team has a competition schedule that’s starting to come together, although there are questions with meet formats and whether or not the Warriors will be able to host the Paul Mariman Invitational.

“Things are constantly changing as coaches try to figure out what we can actually do,” PHS coach Joe Fulton said. “Suffice to say, there will be meets where we can only enter varsity runners due to participation limitations.”

As the schedule currently exists, Philomath plans to open its season on March 4 with a trip to Florence for a meet against Siuslaw and Tillamook. Fulton said he plans to take the top varsity runners only.

“Two days later, we’ll send some kids to Toledo, though I have yet to see how they plan to pull it off with the number of schools that have signed up,” Fulton said.

The Ultimook Race, which has a bit of a departure from traditional courses with runners going through a mud pit, is scheduled for March 13 in Tillamook.

Philomath will then get to know Sweet Home over the last few weeks. The Husky Invitational will serve as a conference preview meet on March 20. Then the conference championships will follow on April 3 at Sweet Home.

The Paul Mariman Invite would be in between those two Sweet Home meets.

“I still hope to host a meet on March 22, but it is doubtful due to the condition of the course,” Fulton said.

Fulton said it’s possible that he “will sneak in another small race or two if I can find them.”

If a state meet happens, it would be on April 10.
